A Day In The Life Of A Professional Organizer

I remember back in 2017 when starting my own professional organizing business was only a dream - I spent a ton of time on the internet researching what it would take to make my dream a reality. I also spent countless hours on social media scrolling the feeds of other professional organizers to get a glimpse into what a day in their lives looked like.

Now, after nearly four years in business, I can say I know what a day in the life of a professional organizer looks like! Of course, no day is typical as a service-based business owner, but below shows more about what my days are often like when I am with clients. In the future I will have to share what a day in the life is like on an office day!

Client Days

7 to 7:45am - Morning routine. I typically wake up, put in my contacts, take my vitamins, and head to our laundry room to throw in a load of laundry. Once I am finished, I come upstairs to feed Penny her breakfast and make my own! During this time I will take out my journal to answer a prompt or two.

7:45 to 8:20am - Exercise. A few years back I began committing to walking every morning. Now, it is one of the non-negotiables in my day. I love to start my morning with a nice long walk and maybe even a few other exercises mixed it. During this time I will listen to a favorite podcast or whatever audiobook I am current onto! On my days with no clients, I will take my walk to another location other than my neighborhood or basement to get out of the routine a bit. I will also hop into my email quick once I am home just to respond to anything needed before the day begins.

8:20 to 9:15am - Get ready. Once I am back from my walk and switched over the laundry, I’ll pour myself a coffee and hop in the shower, then start getting ready for the day. I will grab the laundry and fold it quick too at this time.

9:15 to 9:30am - Prep to leave. At this point I am typically ready for the day and will wrap up any loose ends at home like fill my water bottle, grab my bag and any last cleanup I need to do. Then I am off for my work day!

10am to 2pm - Time with clients. I always work in four hour blocks, and typically this falls between 10am and 2pm, but not always!

2:30 to 3:30pm - Lunch and relax. Once I am home after working on my clients organizing project, I am usually starving and ready for lunch! After moving and bending a lot on the job, I will also usually just relax and decompress while I eat.

3:30 to 5pm - Misc! This block of time changes by the day. Regardless of the day, I’ll make time to pop back into email and do any tasks needed to “close out the day” like sending invoices or posting project photos to social media. I don’t spend long on this though. Sometimes during this time I will have a phone consultation with a potential client and then will make every attempt to start and finish their proposal during this time. Or I may spend a chunk of time researching supplies for a client project. If I don’t have a consultation or research to do, I will usually take care of anything I need to within my home or family life!

5 to 6pm - Cook dinner. I have made it a point to get dinner going at this time because we are pretty in the routine of eating at 6pm. We even comment on how close I can get to 6pm on the dot each night!

6 to 6:45pm - Cleanup and prep for tomorrow. During this time we cleanup after dinner, prep lunches for tomorrow and set the coffee pot. I will also sort my pile of laundry for the next day. Anything we can do to make tomorrow more simple!

7 to 10pm - Family time and get ready for bed. I am typically on the phone with one of my family members checking in almost every night during this time! Once I hang up the phone I am taking my makeup off and changing into pajamas for the night (yay!). We love a relaxing weeknight at home, so we will head to the living room to read or watch a little tv. We also sometimes go to evening walks or sit on our porch and talk, it depends on the night! But usually we are in bed by 10pm and off to sleep for the day ahead!

Phew, a day in the life of a professional organizer, there it is! I hope that someone out there who is considering this field finds this post helpful, or you yourself just enjoy reading up on how I spend my days!
